This website was created with the following goals in mind:
-
To educate the public about the cooperative model, strengthen existing
cooperative businesses, and encourage the establishment of new ones.
-
To generate ideas that will strengthen cooperative businesses and increase
their usefullness to their members and their communities.
-
To advocate for employees of cooperative businesses and support their
being respected, protected and compensated in a way that sets a good
example for other small businesses.
-
To educate members of cooperative businesses about their rights and responsibilities
and to provide a forum for members of cooperative organizations to discuss
ways to ensure that their membership is valued and participation is accepted in
accordance with the organization's rules.
-
To help members of cooperative organizations develop and maintain
means of governance that are as equitable as possible.
-
To resist the notion pervading the global business climate today that
only profits matter, and to keep this sentiment from infecting cooperative
businesses.
-
To promote the utilization of local products and entrepreneurs in
cooperative businesses wherever it makes sense. To research and promote
products and services that take care to minimize their impact on our environment
(minimizing packaging and waste for example), and to raise awareness
about harmful products from companies and corporations that damage our world.
-
To resists the merger mentality that threatens the distribution channels that
cooperative businesses rely on and discourage cooperative businesses from relying
too heavily on any one distribution source.
